This conference is the final event of the Italian Pilot Project on the estimation of the future needs for healthcare professionals. The project focused on pharmacist, nurses, doctors, dentists and midwives and it was coordinated by the Italian Ministry of Health (DG Health Professions and Human Resources of the National Health Service) as part of the Joint Action Health Workforce Planning and Forecasting. The aim of the conference is to debate on the future challenges of health workforce planning in Italy, starting with the pilot project results and the experiences developed during the Joint Action. In the context of the EU’s Health Programme 2014-2020, the Commission has adopted the Work Programme for 2016. The funding opportunities include projects and service contracts, as well as Joint Actions planned with national authorities. The work plan offers support for the health workforce planning and forecasting expert network based on the Joint Action draft recommendations to sustain cooperation.
